   A note about scams

Unfortunately we have seen an alarming rise of over the phone paper scams (commonly referred to as 'Paper Pirates and/ or Toner Phoner's")

Scenario: You get a call from someone who claims to be from your regular office supply company offering a great deal on copier paper, toner or other supplies.
Scam: The supplies never arrive, or the quality is inferior and/or overpriced, and the company has no relation to your regular supplier

These companies obviously do not retain  customers, so they must make their money on the first sale. Their business solely depends on high pressure & deception sales tactics.

Here are some suggestions  to avoid this all-too common mistake

bulletGet to know your account representative.
bulletNever be apprehensive of asking questions!
bulletIf you have any doubts about the caller, ask them for a phone number, most illegitimate companies will not give you one or will give you an fake one.
bulletHave your account representative's business card posted by the phone to verify information
bullet(Our favorite) Tell the person on the phone that you will call them right back, if it is your representative they will of course have no problems with this
bulletKeep your employee's informed of what could happen.
bulletAnswer in full sentences.. never just say "yes"
bulletBe very wary of high pressure sales tactics, especially those with time elements.
bulletIf you receive a call from someone wanting to do a customer satisfaction survey, make sure they are with the company you normally deal with, even if it means getting the number to call back. This is the most commonly tactic used to get your equipment make & model information and the managers name.

What to Do When You’ve Been Duped

The best thing to do is admit it! Learn from the mistake and alert others so they don’t fall for the same mistake. One mistake left unnoticed or not addressed can create a rash of undesired ignorance. Contact both your local BBB and the appropriate law enforcement authorities. Cover the bases with your complaint, sending it to your local BBB, Attorney General’s Office, district attorney and FTC.

If you do happen to receive a call from a company, even if you don't fall for the scam, you should still file a complaint with your local BBB office and the FTC.

  2. File a complaint with the FTC online
